About the Author

Dr. H. James Birx, professor of Anthropology at Canisius College, holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from the State University of New York College at Geneseo, both a M.A. in anthropology and a Ph.D. with distinction in philosophy from the State University of New York at Buffalo, an honorary D.Sci. degree from Braca Karic University in Europe, and a Diplomate of Letters from Grandview College Preparatory School, Boca Raton, Florida. Dr. Birx is the author of the Choice award-winning Theories of Evolution (1984), Human Evolution (1988), Craniometry of the Orchid Site Ossuary (1991), and Interpreting Evolution: Darwin & Teilhard de Chardin (1991). He has also written invited introductions to Darwin's The Voyage of the Beagle, The Descent of Man, and Autobiography, Wallace's Island Life, Nietzsche's Thus Spake Zarathustra, Haeckel's The Riddle of the Universe, and Sir Julian Huxley's Evolutionary Humanism, as well as over 400 chapters, articles, encyclopedia entries, and reviews.Professor Birx has given invited presentations at Harvard University, Princeton University, Yale University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Kansas-Lawrence (Natural History Museum), University of Montana, University of San Francisco, Louisiana State University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Amherst College, Williams College, Rockhurst College, Uckland University in New Zealand, University of Guelph in Canada, Oxford University, Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, both The Free University and Humboldt University in Berlin and Friedrich Schiller University (Ernst Haeckel Haus) in Jena, Germany, both Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University in Russia, New York Academy of Sciences and Russian Academy of Sciences (among others). He has lectured or participated in conferences from Spain, Egypt, Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico to England, New Zealand, Rarotonga, Australia and Yugoslavia. His evolution research has taken him twice to the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador, as well as to Darwin's Down House in Kent, England, the Darwin State Museum in Moscow, Russia, and both Koobi Fora and the Masai Mara in Kenya, Africa.During 1997-1998 & 2001-2002, Dr. Birx was an invited Visiting Scholar at Harvard University (The Divinity School). He has been a Visiting Professor at both Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University in Russia, a Visiting Scholar at both Rockhurst College and the University of Zaragoza in Spain, and a Visiting Fellow at the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava.Professor Birx is on the editorial board of Philo, Proteus, Free Inquiry, Religious Humanism, Common Sense in Russia, Eupraxia in Peru, and Razonamientos in Mexico; a science and philosophy book reviewer for Library Journal; a Charles Darwin Associate in the New York Academy of Sciences; and an elected member of the Executive Committee for the Afro-Asian Philosophy Association (AAPA) in Cairo, Egypt.On 21 May l999, Dr. Birx was honored with the designation "Distinguished Educator" at Canisius College. During 21-25 June 1999, he co-chaired, with the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Faculty of Philosophy, an international conference on "Science & Society" at St. Petersburg State University, Russia.In May-June 2000, Professor Birx gave invited presentations as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Zaragoza in Spain and as a Visiting Fellow at both the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia. He also was the invited Editor of the special "Nietzsche 2000" commemorative issue of Philosophy Now (England), and wrote the articles "Forensic Anthropology" and "Medical Examiner" for the four-volume work, Encyclopedia of Crime & Punishment, for SAGE Publications. He is presently writing three entries for the forthcoming Encyclopedia of Community for SAGE Publications, and is authoring God & Evolution: From Philosophical Speculation to Scientific Materialism for Charles C Thomas, Publisher, Ltd.During 2001, Dr. Birx was First Vice-President of the New York State Sociological Association. On 5 June 2001, he co-chaired the international conference on "Darwin, Evolution, & Values" at the Darwin State Museum in Moscow, Russia. He is the President and Editor of the International Darwin Association, and President of The Anthropology Society (Western New York).In February 2002, Professor Birx delivered his invited paper "Philosophy & Evolution: Critical Reflections" for an international conference celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Faculty of Philosophy at Moscow State University, Russia. On 4 April 2002, he gave the invited inaugural presentation "Pierre Teilhard de Chardin: God, Evolution, & Unity" for the Honors Program's Distinguished Lecturer Series at the University of Montana-Western in Dillon, Montana. And, he gave a keynote address on "The Value of Anthropology: Humankind, Science, & Reason" on April 5. During the summer of 2002, Dr. Birx was an invited Distinguished Visiting Professor at The University of Montana-Western, and taught topics in anthropology and topics in philosophy.  On November 8-9, he gave invited lectures on "Charles Darwin: Yesterday, Today, & Tomorrow" and "Interpreting Evolution: Consequences for Anthropology" at The University of Montana, in Missoula, for the Montana Anthropology Students Association.In January 2003, Professor Birx will participate in the Hawai'i International Conference on Arts and Humanities, presenting a paper on "Nietzsche, Darwin & Evolution" and, with artist Keith R.W. Kersting, an exhibit on "The Value of Art in Philosophy" (sponsored by the University of Hawai'i-West Oahu).In the summer of 2003, withKeith R.W. Kersting, Dr. Birx will participate in geological and paleontological research atThe Wyoming Dinosaur Center in Thermopolis; they will prepare both slide and video presentations on evolution for educational purposes.  Birx will also be a Visiting Scholar at The University of Montana-Westernfrom June to December, 2003.In August 2001, Professor Birx had been appointed a Faculty Fellow of Sigma Phi Epsilon (New York Lambda Chapter)at Canisius College.Dr. H. James Birx is a member of the American Anthropological Association,  American Philosophical Association, American Teilhard Association, and North American Nietzsche Society, as well as the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and American Association of University Professors. He is also a frequent guest on educational radio and international television interview programs, e.g., he gave a presentation on "The Evolution of Charles Darwin" for a PBS Evolution Initiative workshop at Canisius College on 20 April 2002 and was featured in "The Thinking of Evolution" for public television.   Professor Birx is the recipient of numerous academic honors and awards.  His professional listings include Who's Who in the World
